The purpose of the Refuge is to conserve the nesting habitat of the endangered Golden-cheeked Warbler and the Black-capped Vireo.  Both birds make their nests in the Hill Country, and the warbler is exclusive to the area.  Additionally, the city has 15 miles of shore line and 44,000 acres of the cleanest lake water in Texas.  The rolling hills and wood provide the perfect setting for walking, hiking, and biking.

 Most residents of Lago Vista are members    of the  Lago Vista (LVPOA).   The LVPOA system  consists of ten lakeside park facilities including  three boat launch ramps, an 88-slip marina, a 60-foot fishing well, campgrounds, swimming pool, a recreation center, a clubhouse with a full catering kitchen, an activities center, two tennis courts, two basketball courts, playing fields and an administrative office building. The Activity Center houses an extensive fitness center, a dark room, two meeting rooms, three separate bathrooms, and a kitchen with a refrigerator and microwave. The Recreation Center consists of a pool and ping pong tables, games, arts and crafts, large size TV and computers.  Members receive all these benefits for a very small annual membership fee.
